 About the Organisation

 

The Mijwan Welfare Society (MWS) is a non-governmental organisation that was founded by the renowned poet, Kaifi Azmi in 1993. The organisation seeks to inspire, equip and empower rural citizens with the tools to catalyse change within their own communities. MWS is working towards its mission by building a model for rural development in the village of Mijwan, that is both replicable and scalable across the country.

 

In order to achieve its goals, the organisation works towards the following:

  •  Ensuring quality education: The organisation supports existing government primary and upper primary schools, and operates a high school and inter-college for girls from the area.
  •  Supporting sustainable livelihoods: The organisation provides skill training, supports local enterprises, creates opportunities for growth outside of the village, and builds institutional partnerships to create employment opportunities.
  •  Enabling meaningful civic participation: The organisation encourages informed civic participation, and has future plans to strengthen the capacity of the Gram Panchayat.

 

About the Role

 

The CEO is responsible for the day-to-day operations of MWS, in accordance with the strategic direction established by the Board. They lead the activities of the NGO, and oversee its staff to ensure effective and efficient operations, systems, and procedures to achieve the organisation’s goals, and create impact for its beneficiaries. The CEO is also responsible for coordinating fundraising efforts and accounting for the financial sustainability of the organisation, for which they work closely with the Board. Additionally they also support the Board to ensure Good Governance of the Organisation.

 

MWS is poised to grow and expand the breadth and depth of its work. To achieve this we are looking for a dedicated and dynamic professional interested in leading and growing with the organisation in this challenging but rewarding role.

 

The CEO will be based in Mumbai, but will be required travel to the District of Azamgarh (Uttar Pradesh) regularly, to oversee local operations. Specific responsibilities of the CEO include, inter alia, the following:

  • Strategic Alignment: Aligning the team, and the various institutions and activities run by organisation, with the vision, mission, and goals.
  • Operational Oversight: Overseeing the operation of the various institutions and programs, conducted by respective program leaders, and ensuring the steady progress of projects in Mijwan.
  • Policy Planning: Developing policies and procedures and overseeing their implementation by the team.
  • Financial Planning: Developing the budget and financial plans for the organisation and promoting financial sustainability.
  • Fundraising: Securing funding from new and existent donors, and coordinating fundraising efforts with both the Board and the NGO team.
  • Team Management: Hiring new team members, directly overseeing the work of the Mumbai team, developing strong linkages between the Mumbai and Mijwan offices, and resolving any conflicts that may arise within the organisation.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Overseeing and ensuring regular and effective monitoring and evaluation of the organisation and its program, and using the information to guide decision making.
  • Reporting: Keeping the board, donors and funders, and the public apprised on the progress of various projects through documentation and reports, and any other required communications.
  • Developing Partnerships: Identifying and building strategic partnerships to further the goals of the organisation and build its capacity to effectively implement its activities.
  • Representation: Representing the organisation and its Board to the Government, private sector, other NGOs, individual or institutional partners, and the media.
  • Supporting Governance: Providing the Board with the necessary support directly, and through the team, to ensure transparency, accountability, and statutory compliance.

 

Desired Skills and Experience

 

The candidate should enjoy the challenge of working on complex problems and should be passionate about the development sector. They must be a reliable team player, with a demonstrated ability to work with flexibility, efficiency, and diplomacy. The candidate will be required to use a mix of interpersonal, management, and analytic skills in a fast-paced and challenging environment, to develop and oversee sound strategies and implementation plans.

 

Specific requirements include the following:

 

-          8-10 years of work experience in the Indian and/or international development sector

-          3-4 years of work experience leading programs or teams in the development sector

-          Experience raising funds and managing relationships with funding partners

-          Experience managing complex, long‐term projects, with a wide range of stakeholders

-          Experience developing and managing budgets

-          Experience in the Education, Vocational Skilling, and/or Civic Participation spaces beneficial

-          Entrepreneurial attitude with a willingness to build systems and processes, as well as the ability to think and act creatively in a resource constrained environment

-          Ability to work independently, as well as to motivate and lead a team

-          Fluency in spoken and written English and Hindi

-          Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills

-          Strong trouble-shooting and problem solving abilities

-          Strong time management skills, with and structured approach to tasks, and punctuality in meeting deadlines.

 

Salary Range

Rs. 80,000/- to Rs. 1,25,000/- per month, based on skills, experience, and performance during application process.
