About 40 crore workers working in the informal economy in India are at risk of falling deeper into poverty during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) said in a report today that the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting 2.7 billion workers globally due to the lockdowns. COVID-19 is already affecting tens of millions of informal workers. In India, Nigeria and Brazil, the number of workers in the informal economy affected by the lockdown and other containment measures is substantial. In India, with a share of almost 90 per cent of people working in the informal economy, about 400 million workers or 40 crore in the informal economy are at risk of falling deeper into poverty during the crisis.
Now with COVID-19 and the lockdown situation in India, migrant workers are back in their villages. What they will do after that? How they will sustain their life in their villages?. Will they go back to the cities again?
Mijwan Welfare Society team has come with a policy based solution to address different issues related with migrant workers in the form of Rozgar Dhaba.
Rozgar Dhaba is a village information exchange center to provide information on local jobs, government schemes, health schemes, and options for livelihood and minimize unsafe migration and unemployment. It collects information from local employers for local jobs and also collects information about job seekers, who are looking for jobs and displays the gathered information. It connects migrant workers/farmers/village communities to the opportunities available for livelihood. It also assist the community in availing different documents like ration card, bank account.
Rozgar Dhaba works as a catalyst for providing information. Charges are only for specific services and the villagers avail information at no cost.
